For HiD Ballast

Replacement HiD Bulb (Variable Focus)

Starting at: £200.00

These bulbs are compatible with Light Monkey, Salvo and some Agir-Brokk HiD lights.  They are not compatible with Halcyon lights.

Select the correct bulb for your ballast.  Note that the bulb does not effect the power of the light as this is defined by the ballast. i.e if a 50w bulb is but onto a 21w ballast it results in a 21w light that is using a more expensive bulb than it requires (it is not a way to upgrade the light).

How do you know that the bulb requires replacing?
A failed HiD bulb will typically pulse with 5 short flashes when you attempt to switch the light on.  This is caused by the ignitor attempting to strike the gas chamber before giving up.  These pulses can be quite difficult to see so you may need to shield the lamp from direct light or darken the room.

If you cannot detect any pulses then the issue might be the battery (check voltage), the chord (attempt gentle manipulation), or the ballast or the ignitor, in which case get in touch and arrange to send the light in to us for inspection.

How to change a bulb
Losen the grub screw on the reflector and remove the reflector.  Grip the glass lamp cover (‘test tube’) and twist and pull it clear of the bulb.  Please note that some of te more powerful HiDs (35w and 50w) have a collet around the base of the lamp cover and this needs to be unscrewed and removed before attampting to remove the lamp cover.  Do not use excessive force as the glass can break!

At the base of the bulb there is a ceramic disk which sits on top of the delrin stem that has the test tube o-rings on it.  Gently separate the delrin stem and the ceramic base of the bulb and pull the base of the bulb clear to reveal two wires.  These wires will typically have heatshrink on them so use a scalpel to gently cut away the heatshrink and reveal the subd connectors underneath.  Be very careful not to damage the wires!

Pull the male and female subd connectors clear, drop some fresh heatshrink onto the wires and replace the bulb and apply heat to the heatshrink.  Then push the new bulb into position onto the delrin stem of the light head.

Twist the test tube back into place.  DO NOT LUBRICATE THE TEST TUBE O-RINGS!

TIP
Before replacing the test tube switch the light on for 30 seconds or so.  This not only confirms that the bulb works but it also heats the bulb and once you switch the bulb off it cools to create a vacuum which helps to hold the lamp cover in place.

Please note:

The 21w HiD bulb is suitable for 18w, 21w and 24w lights.

10w bulbs and 10w ballasts are no longer available so please contact us for alternative options.
